Communicating Through Conflict, Change, and Uncertainty

Working with people who have lost their job and are facing financial insecurity is challenging on many levels.  It’s easy to get overwhelmed, care too much or trigger anger. You have to maintain your clarity, listen compassionately without taking on more emotional drama. They may resist your help, but you can’t take it personally. In this three-part series, we focus on specific skills for dealing with drama in difficult times so that you can help your customer and grow personally in the process.

 

What to Expect

You will get an email the day before our scheduled meeting and the morning of our meeting.

The email will contain the Zoom link. A best practice is to arrive 5-10 minutes early to allow for glitches or problems getting logged in.

Every session you will receive 60 – 90 minutes of training content. The remainder of the time will be used for Q and A or coaching. There will be some opportunities to engage during the presentation as well.

We have allotted 120 minutes for each training, however, if we get done a bit early, it’s good to use that time to reflect, journal, or make time for deliberate practice.

 

Attendance

Each week you will get reminders about the class, and it is your responsibility as an attendee to be at the meeting. If you must miss a class, please get with a teammate and allow them to update you on the learning. There are no recordings and no make-up classes available.

Clarity

 

Clarity is not just a feeling or a fact. Clarity is a crucial skill that helps you facilitate understanding, manage conflicts, and identify the real obstacles keeping your customers stuck. Without clarity, it’s easy to get distracted, off track, or get overwhelmed by circumstances. Clarity can change any situation.

Objectives

  • Understand the role of clarity in communication
  • Clearly speak to the vision/outcome
  • Quickly identify the real problem
  • Discern the facts from the assumptions and stories

Radical Listening

 

When working with those who are highly stressed, going through loss, or feeling hopeless, it’s common to want to fix the problem with advice, or to completely avoid anything that might spark anger.  When every cell in your body wants to fix the situation, argue, or avoid, that is when you need the skill of radical listening. Radical listening is a learned skill that helps you identify irresponsible language, make the other person feel heard, and get to the crux of the issue without wasting time or causing even more conflict.

Objectives

  • Learn how to listen even when it’s difficult
  • Identify the six common listening mistakes
  • Regain composure when triggered
  • Make people feel understood even if you disagree

Release Resistance

 

Guess what every difficult conversation has in common? Resistance. Resistance means the conversation is either not advancing or not going in the direction you want. Because it’s so difficult to deal with resistance, most of us avoid conversations, and as a result we resist the other person’s resistance. This course offers a way to identify and test for resistance, as well as two techniques to overcome your own resistance, and help your customers move forward.

Objectives

  • Identify four types of resistance
  • Use a magic phrase to test for resistance
  • Learn a method to overcome resistance
  • Redirect non-productive conversations and regain control
